‘Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty, is divided between God and the world. ‘ James 4:8
The misconception in the interpretation of this scripture is that God is far. God is not far! The word of God clearly states that when we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, He lives on the inside of us. Drawing near to God is having a deeper revelation of who He is. I’ll give you an illustration.
When we look at a plane in the sky, it fits between your thumb and index finger when you try to measure its size. However, if you start making your way towards that object you will realize that the wheel alone is much larger than you are. How big an object is, is a function of its proximity from the point of perspective. The closer we are, the truer it’s size is to you.
This is the same with God, when we seek Him through study and meditation of scriptures, prayer, and fellowship with the Holy Spirit we realize that how we see Him goes from just a provider and protector, a place of refuge and comfort, to Him being sovereign. The miracles you will start to experience or witness as a result of your revelation of Him, are indescribable.
Maybe you have once said this before ‘I want to go back or miss the days where I used to be on fire for the things of God, praying fervently and sharing His Word.’ This is me too when the busyness of life gets in the way and I realize that I have forgotten my identity, relationship, power and purpose that come from the knowledge of Him.
God gave me the example of an earthly marriage relationship. The health of any marriage is a function of the investment one puts into it. As you deliberately seek to know your spouse, your intimacy grows. Our relationship with Him will only flourish through fellowship.
We have but one instruction from our Father in our introductory scripture. God is calling us to seek Him today. If you are reading this, a good place to start is by making Jesus the Lord of your life.
